The Cause of destruction in your kitchen: Rodents

Rodents to some people are known as vermin and dirty creatures. There are different types of rodents and in fact, the largest family of mammals are rodents. Rodent identification is simple. They are given the name 'rodents' (meaning 'gnawing animal') because of large incisor teeth and because of the way that they eat. They have two long pairs of incisors which are used like chisels to gnaw on hard foods like wood. These incisors grow continuously and they are worn down by gnawing.

There are different types of rodents and they can be found in different places. Here is a list of few types of some rodents:-
  • Rats
  • Mice
  • Hamsters
  • Squirrels
  • Chipmunks
  • Beavers
It is quite common for some rodents to enter the house. These rodents are usually roof rats or house mice. These are known as rodent pests and they can be found in peoples attics and they can also sometimes be heard scurrying around. They can also be found in kitchens trying to find scraps of food and they could be hiding and lurking around in gaps in walls, and cupboards. Another place that you may find rodents is on livestock farms. You can find mice and rats in places like hay and straw where they make beds.

Overall, they can be found literally anywhere and they can adapt to change well. For this reason some people find that rodent control is the only answer to eliminate them.

What are the Common Diseases Transmitted by Rodents?

Rodents are wild. They can carry diseases and thus they can bring them into our homes. Rat bite fever is a rare disease within the United States that can be caught either by being bitten or by being scratched by an infected rat. Even rodents such as gerbils or mice can pass the disease on. People have been known to catch this disease just by handling the infected animal without being bit or scratched. Other diseases that they carry include:
  • LeptoSpirosis
  • Murine Typhus
  • Salmonella
A rat can pass on LeptoSpirosis through its urine. This can then be passed to humans through water, food, soil or urine. The disease could lead to liver failure or even meningitis The initial symptoms mcould be associated with flu.

Murine Typhus can be passed from both rat and its fleas and it can lead to symptoms such as nausea, headache, body aches and a rash. Salmonella is a serious disease and it is spread through the rats droppings. It can lead to serious health problems including vomiting, fever, diarrhoea and chills. .Rats and other rodents are dirty animals in the wild and they should be treated with caution and eliminated as soon as possible if they are in your home.

Rodent control products and precautions needed

Rodents entering the house can cause a lot of damage either by eating away or scratching at the furniture and by leaving droppings everywhere. When a rat enters the kitchen or the rest of the house, it is likely to spread diseases as well.

For effective rodent control there are steps that can be taken to prevent them from entering the home. Firstly, you can restrict access by blocking or filling any gaps that appear in walls, as rodents such as mice or rats can easily seek out this weakness and take advantage of it.

There are pest repeller products in the market. Here are a couple of electronic rodent repeller products.
MPR10 Ultra Magnetic Pest Repeller
This works by transmitting a pulse through the electrical field that exists around the electrical wiring in any building. It can protect your house by using the electrical wiring that exists within it.

It works by irritating the nervous system of the rodents which causes them discomfort and encourages them to leave and look for a comfortable place.

As the device utilises the wiring which goes around your home to sockets, light fittings & switches etc, will penetrate the areas that you cannot see, like wall cavities, floor spaces and loft areas.
Its features include
  • One device will cover up to 2500 sq. ft. (2/3 bedroom house) or plug one device on each level for larger properties.
  • It has a built in night light.
  • It is very easy to use and it is needed to plug it in to a 3 pin 230 volt socket.
  • This will not harm any electrical equipment.
  • It is not suitable for outdoor use.
  • The good thing is it is safe with non rodent pets.
This is a good pest repeller that has a range of features.
Pest Stop 500 Pest Repeller
The pest stop 500 covers around 500 square feet in a single open area such as one room. The ultrasound doesn't travel through walls or other solid objects when the unit is being placed.

The disadvantage of this one is it won't clear rodents in the loft of a house if it is plugged in downstairs. To be able to do this you need the pest clear 2000 which is stronger and will pass through walls and solid objects.

The pest stop 500 causes auditory stress to mice which disrupt their normal behaviour patterns. Therefore it becomes uncomfortable for them to be in the same room. The results generally take a few days to work but it can take slightly longer.

If you notice droppings near the device this doesn't mean that the device is broken. Mice may go to the scene to investigate as they are curious about it, even though the noise is disturbing them.

This isn't the most ideal pest repellent for deterring ants. It does affect most rodents and other crawling insects.

The good thing about this electronic rodent repeller is that it is completely safe to use in the home because it doesn't use chemicals. It doesn't harm pet dogs, cats, birds or even fish.
PestClear (Pest-Stop) 2000 Pest Deterrent
This is one of the best on the market. By combining two proven pest control systems, electromagnetic interference and ultrasonic sound, PestClear provides the most powerful protection.

It does use both strong control systems in one. It penetrates walls better than anything else, dislodging nests and also uses electrical wiring to distribute its effects around large areas.

It is very effective against:-

  • Cockroaches
  • Rats
  • Mice
  • Woodlice
  • Ants
  • Other rodents
This product is completely safe to children pets and electrical appliances.

If you do have a rodent pest problem it is always worth getting some kind of pest control product to eliminate them as soon as possible. Whether you use general rodent control or specific control for each different rodent, make sure you are careful and that you seek professional advice if the problem is quite large in the mice control process...
