Scorpion bites can kill! Getting rid of scorpions

There are over 1000 different species of scorpions around the world. They are related to spiders, ticks and mites and they are a fairly ancient species. They are commonly known for their sting on the end of their tails and many can in fact, be deadly.
Some Scorpion facts include:
  • Scorpions have adapted to a wide range of environments including the plains, savannahs, deciduous forests, mountainous pine forests and even caves. This is why they are commonly found in people's homes. They find it easy to adjust to the different settings. In snowy areas, they hibernate during the cold months of the year.
  • In the U.S 90 species of scorpion have been found. They are most commonly found in southern Arizona and some parts of Texas and central Oklahoma.
  • Scorpions are nocturnal creatures that ambush their prey by simply waiting in the shadows as they sense the preys approach.
  • Some scorpions are known to eat their own kind but they mainly feed on insects such as roaches, though larger scorpions may feed on small lizards.
  • They first paralyze their prey with venom and then they spray them. After that they stop their mobility with an acid spray. This helps to dissolve the tissues within the prey and the remains can then be sucked up by the scorpion.

There are many different types of scorpions including:-

Water scorpions
As a matter of fact the Water scorpion isn't technically a scorpion, but an insect with 3 pairs of legs and two pairs of wings. They get their name from their grasping forelimbs which are very similar to the anterior 'pincers' of scorpions, and a breathing tube which conjures up the image of the scorpions long stinging tail.

The forelegs of the water scorpion are adapted for grasping prey, but lack pincers. Instead they use a jack-knifing design with the outer segments folding into a groove to secure prey. The tail siphon of the water scorpions are actually two straight filaments pressed against one another. The siphon is not jointed, can pivot only at the base, and does not sting. It is used to obtain air from the water surface, like a snorkel.
Bark scorpion
The Bark scorpion is about two inches long in length and its name reflects its habi of resting on the bottom portions of pieces of wood. As it is the most dangerous scorpion in the whole of Arizona a sting from a Bark scorpion can be fatal to humans.

What are the precautions and treatment for scorpion bites?

Scorpion bite can be very painful and even deadly, so prevention is always essential. You should be aware of where scorpions hide. They are nocturnal creatures so during the day they hide in burrows or under stones and rocks and they can also be found hiding in dark quiet places indoors. Since scorpions have poor eye sight, they rely on vibrations to locate their pray.

If your place may have scorpions, wearing hard shoes will help and you shouldn't ever go bare foot if you are in any doubt.

The treatment

Scorpion stings need to be treated right away. so try the following steps:-
  • Try to draw out the venom straight away with an extractor pump. clean the area with some soap and water or an alcohol pad, after the venom as been removed.
  • Try to cool the wound as this allows the body to easily break down the molecular structure of the venom and it also reduces the pain.
  • If it is very warm, try a cool wet compress.
  • The victim needs to be calm. If the victim panics, the venom will spread more quickly.

Methods to control scorpions

Removing rocks, wood piles, loose boards, debris and old tyres can discourage scorpions.

Make sure that the door and window seals are tightened, and cover them. Close any vents or holes to keep scorpions outside. By controlling other insects this will help to control the scorpions as the scorpions feed the insects.

Once you have taken all precautions to prevent scorpions as much as possible in outdoor area, some people may find that they also have a problem indoors. A lot of precautions need to be taken to prevent getting stung.

At night time take extra precaution by wearing hard shoes. To help identify scorpions at night, use a black light as the scorpion's body will reflect the light

If you need extra protection using a hand held zapper will electrocute the target. An easier tool is the bug/vacuum zapper. By using this, it will trap and kill a scorpion without any mess.

Other scorpion pest control methods that can be used are:-
  • Scorpion glue traps - Attracts scorpions with the scent of roaches.
  • PT- Cykick Aerosol - This will kill the scorpion on contact.
  • DRIONE - This is a dry dust that will not kill the scorpions but it will repel them from the area as the scorpions hate this. You can use this for longer lasting protection. This needs to be applied in livings areas but not in moist regions as drione wont work when it gets wet.
It takes lots of time to cure this problem. Therefore you have to be patient and vigilant in dealing with this dangerous element..
